No sector illustrates Somaliland’s economic story more clearly than livestock.
For generations, pastoralism has shaped the social, cultural, and economic foundations of Somaliland. Livestock remains the country’s largest productive sector, contributing an estimated 60 percent of GDP and generating approximately 85 percent of export earnings. The sector supports the livelihoods of a significant proportion of the population and remains Somaliland’s primary source of foreign exchange.
The scale of the industry is reflected in export performance. In 2024, Somaliland exported approximately 3.46 million sheep and goats, 202,331 cattle, and 144,730 camels, primarily to Gulf markets. These figures place Somaliland among the leading livestock-exporting economies in the Horn of Africa.
Yet Somaliland’s greatest livestock opportunity lies not in maintaining the current model, but in transforming it.
Historically, economic activity has focused on the export of live animals. While profitable, this approach captures only a fraction of the potential value embedded within the livestock sector. Repeated livestock import bans imposed by Gulf countries over the past two decades have exposed the vulnerabilities of relying heavily on live-animal exports. Each disruption has reinforced a central lesson: long-term competitiveness requires value addition.
The next phase of growth will depend on developing an integrated livestock value chain. Modern veterinary services, animal health systems, quarantine facilities, livestock traceability, commercial feed production, fodder farming, dairy processing, meat packaging, leather production, and refrigerated logistics all represent significant investment opportunities.
Rather than exporting animals alone, Somaliland could also export chilled meat, processed dairy products, leather goods, animal feed products, and other higher-value commodities. Such a transition would create jobs, increase export earnings, strengthen resilience against external shocks, and contribute to broader industrialization.
For investors seeking opportunities with proven market demand and established export channels, livestock remains one of Somaliland’s most attractive sectors.
